On 1st November, it was announced that the leadership of the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant, STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production), has transitioned to UK Industrial Fusion Solutions Ltd (UKIFS). The APPG on Fusion Energy welcomes this positive step in the UK’s journey towards commercialisation of the technology.
UKIFS will bring together an experienced team dedicated to translating decades of fusion research into a functioning prototype plant that will be capable of supplying low-carbon, safe, and sustainable energy to the grid. Through this, STEP will deliver significant economic and social benefits to the UK, particularly to the East Midlands region.
Paul Methven, CEO of UKIFS and Senior Responsible Owner for STEP, said: “The launch of UK Industrial Fusion Solutions demonstrates significant progress and commitment to developing fusion as a viable clean energy source, and also to creating a UK-led fusion industry.”
This announcement follows the launch of a major ongoing procurement exercise to select STEP’s strategic, long-term industry partners and marks a milestone moment on the journey to deliver the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant.
