Parliamentary Q&A session: What are the near-term benefits of fusion energy?

On Monday 18th November, the Fusion Energy APPG hosted a Q&A session for parliamentarians on the near-term benefits of fusion energy.

Speakers included:

  • Dr R.David Edelman, Chief Policy & Global Affairs Officer at TAE Technologies
  • Liam Brennan, Director of TE Magnetics at Tokamak Energy
  • Dr Tom Wallace-Smith, Co-Founder and CTO of Astral Systems

Questions focused on the wide-reaching contributions of fusion energy R&D to the UK economy, including supporting the production of medical isotopes, which help to treat various forms of cancer, high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets, which support renewable energy developments including wind turbines, and changing the way we store energy. Beyond this, fusion also has a number of applications for other technologies including robotics, computing, AI, electric vehicles and power storage.

During the session, speakers touched upon the scale of the opportunity of fusion and recent developments in other countries in developing and commercialising fusion. Speakers called on policymakers to ensure fusion remains a key priority, in order to cement the UK’s leadership.
