Government announces over £2.5 billion investment into nuclear fusion

The Fusion Energy APPG welcomes the Government’s announcement to invest more than £2.5 billion in nuclear fusion, supporting the UK’s world-leading role in fusion energy and signalling the Government’s strong commitment to fusion energy.

This investment will take place over five years and includes driving forwards the STEP programme, the UK’s fusion power plant programme. Located in West Burton, STEP will be the first fusion plant of its kind in the world and is set to create thousands of new jobs in the region.

Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary, said that “nuclear fusion offers the potential of an energy-abundant future” and that the Government is “determined to make the investments to stay ahead as a country” in the global race for fusion energy.

Alongside this announcement, the Government also announced £14.2 billion of additional investment to build Sizewell C nuclear plant.
